Rico wants wheels off a 1949 Buick Roadmaster.

“…It is an extension of ideas concerning the “Great Migration” inspired by the book “The warmth of other suns”. I am thinking about producing a tire multiple inspired by a specific car/character in the book, the car is a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. The ultimate presentation would need to be worked out but, I’ve attached an example of a potential tire model… I think I want it to be an exact copy with hub cap? We can discuss the options and if you could come up with the tire that would be great…” Rico
Hunting for a real tire and wheel and tire cover proved difficult considering timing and cost. The tire seems to be firestone, deluxe champion, 8.20-15, tubeless 3 1/2, WW, cf765… Tires are no longer measured the way they were back in ’49…
Not a complicated form – we make from scratch. It seems simplest to use the jigger wheel – - – make a template (32″dia to accomodate 15% shrinkage), make a model of one side, make a waster mold, cast two sides in plaster, join, and detail making a plaster model from which to pull a working mold. The size of the mold seems the greatest difficulty and if the end product should be cast or press molded. The mold can be the same regardless.

prepped join – fiberglass mesh secured on one side – thin soft brick spacers embedded – mesh rolled an gooped center gooped – second side placed – outside join built up…

too heavy to easily move manually (approx 100#), strapped in frame and hoisted with come-along. Attached trimmed center of waster to brent wheel head to facilitate truing Roadmaster wheel.
